TT Arietis : the low state revisited ?

We present optical and ultraviolet spectroscopy of TT Ari obtained during the 1982−85 low state. In November/December 1983, accretion had almost completely ceased, unveiling both the white dwarf and the secondary star. The IUE spectrum obtained during that occasion contains absorption lines ofLyα, Si IV, C IV, and He II. We derive a photospheric temperature of Twd = 39 000K and find the abundan...

Photometry of 40 LMC Cepheids

We present V and Ic CCD photometry for 40 LMC Cepheids at 1 to 3 epochs. This represents a significant increase in the number of LMC Cepheids with I-band data, and, as we show, is a useful addition to the sample which can be used to calibrate the period–luminosity relations in these important bands.

Progressive dyspnoea in a 40-yr-old female.

A 40-yr-old female presented with dyspnoea on minimal exertion and a paroxysmal dry cough, keeping her awake for long periods. The shortness of breath was reported to be progressive over the last 18 months. She had never smoked and was not on medication. There was no recent history of travelling and she only had a dog at home. Her medical history was marked with autosomal dominant polycystic ki...

Arietis : 1985 – 1999 accretion disc behaviour

Results of a long-term (1985–1999) photometric study of the VY Scl novalike TT Ari and CCD spectroscopic observations of the star in the region of Hα are presented. Photoelectric UBV observations carried out at Rozhen and Belogradchik observatories confirmed ∼ 6 years cyclical variability of the accretion disc luminosity in high state found by frequency analysis of 70 years long light curve. Th...

Activity cycles in UX Arietis

By analysing long term radio observations of the binary system UX Arietis, activity cycles have been discovered which are strongly reminiscent of those present in the Sun. It is well known that the activity cycle in the Sun is 11 years, while the general magnetic field reverses every 11 years, returning to its initial configuration after 22 years, namely after two consecutive cycles of activity...
